Baker & McKenzie has had a presence in Colombia for more than 50 years, establishing our Bogotá office as a leading figure in the legal landscape of South America.
Our legal team is licensed in Colombia and in other international jurisdictions, providing clients a full range of legal services. As part of Baker & McKenzie's worldwide network, we serve both foreign and national enterprises in their business activities in Colombia as well as domestic clients in their activities abroad.
Our breadth and depth of experience in national and international corporate work have put us among the top ranks of legal advisors in the country. Acting in some of the most important foreign investment projects in Colombia, we are recognized particularly for our strength in the banking and finance, privatization and infrastructure, trademarks and patents, and corporate, commercial, and M&A arenas. Our banking and finance experience has involved us in some of the largest infrastructure projects in Colombia, including the financing of gas pipelines of the western region of the country. We act for a mix of local corporations and international banks in lending, restructuring, and local capital markets transactions, representing, for example, domestic mobile phone company, Celumovil, in the major refinancing of a $750 million debt through bridge and syndicated loans and local bond issues; or a group of banks in the restructuring of Eurki di Colombia S.A.'s indebtedness.
Our corporate and commercial practice is noted for its success in privatization projects and cross-border transactions, particularly in the telecommunications industry. Our work has included advising on the ongoing privatization of Banco Cafetero (one of the largest Colombian banks), the $1.2 billion privatization of local power generation companies, the $115 million privatization of Nicaragua's power distribution network and advising BellSouth on the $800 million acquisition of Celumovil and Cocelco; or Rahm & Haas in the sale of its agribusiness to Dow Agroscience. |
